Hi, Everyone

Joanne's message about renewing your membership of ANZCA for next
year prompts me to report that situational exigencies have resulted
in my being able to publish only two issues of AJC this year.
However, do not be concerned about being shortchanged. I’m currently
getting into print Volume 33 (2,3), the contents of which I have
listed below. This is the first double issue since the historic AJC
5 & 6 that Noel King and Stephen Muecke guest-edited in 1984, in
which they published Tony Bennett, Jennifer Craik, John Frow, Cathy
Greenfield, Ian Hunter, Gerhard Leitner, and Albert Moran.

The papers in this upcoming AJC demonstrate a nice connection with, as well as a counterpoint to, issues that key communication scholars were concerned with 22 years ago.

Regards
Ros

ANZCA 2006 Conference “Empowerment, Creativity and Innovation: Challenging Media and Communication in the 21st Century”

Another successful ANZCA conference was held in July at the University of Adelaide. Vice-President Chika Anyanwu (President Elect) wove together a wonderful array of papers, panels, keynote addresses and social events that kept a lively group of registrants stimulated. In her Presidential Address Dr Colleen Mills challenged her audience to look for ways to penetrate the managerial discourses that have taken hold in the corridors of power to ensure we talk with rather than past those that manage our institutions. The keynote speakers that followed were an impressive international line-up who successfully captured the conference theme from five very different perspectives. They were Professors Marsha Kinder (University of Southern California, USA), Anna Everett (University of California, Santa Barbara, USA), Tom O’Regan (University of Queensland, Australia), Jim Barker (University of Waikato, New Zealand) and Associate Professor Andrew Kenyon (University of Melbourne, Australia).

Colleen_LaunchBook

As well as enjoying the many fine presentations delivered by established scholars and post-graduate students, attendees were able to congratulate Professor Owen Hargie (University of Ulster) as Colleen Mills launched the third edition of his highly acclaimed The Handbook of Communication Skills. The programme had something for everyone including the more agile and adventurous at heart. They had ample opportunities to test their fitness to an African beat. The wine enthusiasts were not forgotten either. The first evening allowed them to become better acquainted with some of the wonderful wines from South Australia. The programme finished with a very informative trans-Tasman creative industries panel followed by an award ceremony where Scott Rickard was awarded the inaugural President’s Service Award.

The award recognised Scott’s fine efforts on behalf of ANZCA in Victoria where she has been working with other ANZCA members to encourage post-graduate activities. As a busy post-graduate student herself she is an example to us all.

The refereed papers, all abstracts and the full texts of some keynote addresses for ANZCA 2006 will be published on this website in due course and will include the DEST documentation (For Australian members).

The next ANZCA conference will be convened in Melbourne in July 2007 by Dr John Tebbitt (La Trobe University). Details will be posted on this website shortly.

Talking Discourse ANZCA seminar for post-graduate students 25 July 2006

A well attended post-graduate seminar sponsored by ANZCA was held at the University of Canterbury in July. After an entertaining keynote address from Professor Kon Kuiper (Department of Linguistics) on researching discourse and an equally stimulating presentation by Dr Donald Matheson (Department of Mass Communication and Journalism) on critical discourse, attendees from a wide range of disciplines presented snapshots of their discourse-based research.

Humanities on The Hill (HOTH) 16-17 August 2005

Our President, Dr Colleen Mills, represented ANZCA at a meeting in Canberra between members of both houses of the Australian Parliament and representatives from organisations covering the humanities, arts and social sciences. This meeting, organised by CHASS (Council for the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences) gave representatives from CHASS’s member organisations the opportunity to share interests, ideas and concerns with over 100 members of Parliament. The event was both extremely interesting and informative and highlighted the value to be gained from informal discussion between interest groups and parliamentarians. One suggestion that emerged from the discussions in Canberra was that ANZCA should establish a Register of Expertise so expert comment and advice can be readily sought from ANZCA members. The Membership will be canvassed later this year to establish the level of support for such an initiative.

CONFERENCE 2004

Anne Dunn has been busy organising the 2004 ANZCA Conference. Here's a brief of the conference:

"Making a Difference": the Australian and New Zealand Communication Association Conference 2004
The 2004 ANZCA Conference is being hosted by the Media and Communications Progam of the University of Sydney from July 7 - 9, 2004.

The conference will be held at the Women's College, in the grounds of the University, close to the lively inner-city areas of Newtown and Glebe, with good transport to all Sydney's many attractions.

Highlights will include prominent keynote speakers, a philosophy night dinner, and a media hypothetical. We're also looking for a strong postgraduate presence - there will be a recruitment drive in early February, so PGs will be given a bit of grace to get their abstracts in.

The Conference theme is Making a Difference. All scholars from the areas of research that make up the diverse and interdisciplinary field of communication are invited to consider the ways in which we might and should be making a difference - to scholarship and to teaching, to the professions we come from and supply with graduates, to the nation and beyond.

We are now calling for abstracts, papers and panel session proposals. There will be refereed and non-refereed divisions. Streams at this stage are: Journalism, New Media, Public Communication (taken to inc. PR, Advertising, Political Comm), Organisational Communication, Intercultural/International Communication, Communications Policy and Communication Education PLUS - new in 2004 - Radio Studies. Email me or anzca04@arts.usyd.edu.au if you want to suggest another stream but be quick!

Postgraduate students are particularly encouraged to join ANZCA as student members and to submit papers. All papers submitted to the refereed division will be subject to double-blind peer review.

Abstracts of no more than 200 words for refereed and non-refereed papers and panel sessions are due by January 30, 2004. Full papers for review are due by March 19, 2004. Please indicate in which stream you would like your paper to be refereed.

Please send all submissions by email to anzca04@arts.usyd.edu.au

March 2003 Update

All members please note that to send a message to other members of ANZCA, simply compose an email to: members@anzca.net. This email will only be successful if you are already subscribed. If you attempt to send a message which is not successful, please contact the webmaster to note your wish to be included among the members list.

Also, both proposed and old ANZCA rules are available for perusal online. To view the Old Constitution click here. To view the Proposed Constitution click here. We ask that all members view these rules in preparation for the ballot to amend the Constitution of ANZCA.

Full papers for the refereed division of ANZCA are now due. Please ensure you have submitted your papers in accordance with the template guidelines to the Conference Organiser at anzca03@qut.edu.au.

November News: President's Email Message to the Membership, November 1 2002

Dear ANZCA members
See: ANZCA Concise Report and Budget
1. Conference 2003.
We hope the last few months since ANZCA 2002 have been kind to you and we look forward to seeing you at ANZCA 2003. See our web site http://www.anzca.net or go directly to the conference
website http://www.bgsb.qut.edu.au/conferences/ANZCA03/index.html so that you can submit your paper proposals to the organisers.

2. Budget - Keeping the membership informed.
At the 2001 conference it was agreed that ANZCA would present a forward budget to its members. The current committee now has access to the books and the Honorary Treasurer, Joanne Jacobs, has prepared the Draft Budget report which is enclosed. We would welcome your comments. You will see that almost all the dollars from your membership are expended in running the organisation and in providing you with journals. Conferences are
expected to be self-funding and to provide a subsidy for members with reduced costs for members. Conference organisers are expected to find their own sponsorships. We are operating under the principle that for the organisation to be viable its operating or recurrent expenditure should be met out of recurrent funds (i.e.) membership. The fall off in membership following the last rise of $30 in 2001 and evidence from the conference survey and other verbal comments suggests that some present members are resistant to the notion of increasing membership costs beyond $150 at the present time. Accordingly, the executive would consider suggestions about how savings might be made to these recurrentexpenditures. We would also welcome suggestions about expenditures which we have not forecast.3. Changes to the Constitution
Under our rules changes to the constitution can only be made after a mail out (postal)to the members. Before this happens we will be posting the old constitution on our website together with the proposed changes to the Constitution which Helen Wilson has drawn up. If you can read both of these and send any comments to me or to Helen Wilson we can ensure that there needs to be only one mailout which will save ANZCA money.
4. Expert Opinion
From time to time many of us are asked by the Media to comment on a particular aspect of our society from a Communication perspective. I would like to make it easier for Media representatives to contact Communication, Journalism, Cultural Studies, Public Relations and Oranisational Communication and Media Studies academics. Accordingly, I am proposing that we devote a page of our website to a list of such people who are willing to comment on specific Communication topics. If you are willing, could you provide to our honorary website master
Joanne Jacobs, joanne@joannejacobs.net, 1. Your name, your university and email contact 2. The topic you are willing to speak about. 3. Anything else you want included. We will then publicise our website address for this page to the Media. Hopefully this will result in a better informed public, greater respect for the profession and good publicity for ANZCA, you, and your home university.

Mary Power
ANZCA President 2003
